Saturday was a bit of déjà vu for the Bishop Kelly Knights (1-2, 2-5), who played host to the American Fork Kavemen (5-6) out of Utah. Out of the gate and through the first half, the Knights battled back and forth with the Kavemen, but a sloppy third quarter would ultimately allow American Fork too much cushion to pull off the comeback.
After going scoreless and building a three-goal deficit for the first nine minutes of the game, the Knights came to life and rattled off four unanswered goals (two from John Alder (Sr, A), one each from Ben Shalz (Sr, A) and Zach Little (Sr, M) in an 80-second time frame to take the lead 4-3 after one. Just as quickly as the Knights came back though, they faltered – giving up three goals to their one, on an unassisted goal from Jared Dolby (Sr, M) to go down 6-5 after two quarters of play.
The third quarter would be the Knights’ demise Saturday, giving up five goals to their lone one on another unassisted goal, this time by Henry Liao (Sr, M).
Not to go down without a fight, the Knights looked to out-hustle the Kavemen in the fourth quarter. Tyler Spanfellner (So, LSM) would take it upon himself to clear the ball and score a goal just two minutes into the final quarter – hoping to light a much needed fire for Bishop Kelly. Liao would follow-up with another unassisted goal late in the fourth quarter, but sloppy play would be the ultimate obstruction for the Knights, keeping them from overcoming the five-goal third quarter by American Fork.
Despite the poor offensive showing, the Knights would run away with the groundball game, picking up over 50 of the ~80 groundballs.
Bishop Kelly will now focus their attention to the Eagle Mustangs (2-1, 3-3) for a showdown at Eagle High School on Wednesday, April 15th at 6:30 PM.
