Knights Continue to Improve

Despite making great strides in wins over Coeur d’Alene and Lake City, the Knights struggled to close out in back to back games against the Timberline Wolves (10-1, 12-4) and Mountain View Mavericks (7-2, 9-3).

Bishop Kelly @ Timberline
On Wednesday, April 29th, Bishop Kelly would travel to Timberline to take on the Wolves for their Senior night. It would be a back and forth battle all night long, with the Wolves coming securing their victory in the final minute of play.

Timberline would start the scoring off Wednesday night, but the Knights would return back to back goals just a few minutes later from John Alder (Sr, A) to take the lead after one. The second quarter would be much of the same back and forth, with both defenses tightening up, goalies staying on their toes, and offenses becoming more and more patient with their shot selection. The Knights’ lone goal of the second quarter would come from Alder again, giving him a hat trick on the game.

Knotted at three, both teams came out from half ready for action, just the Wolves a little more so. Timberline would control the pace of play and score two unanswered goals in the third and taking a 5-3 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter would see each team finding their groove, trading goals back and forth through the final twelve minutes of play. The Knights would dig in and tie the score at six a piece thanks to goals from Jared Dolby (Sr, M), Clay Larson (Sr, M), and Henry Liao (Sr, M). Just seconds later, the Wolves would regain the lead, and then secure their victory as the Knights looked to force a turnover on their defensive end.

The Knights were led by John Alder with three goals on four shots, Robbie Rebholtz with six groundballs, and Grant Koehl forcing multiple turnovers and scooping up four of his own groundballs. Luke Kempers would register ten saves on the night, seven of those coming in the second half of play.

Bishop Kelly @ Mountain View
On Friday, May 1st, the Knights would make the short trip west to take on the Mavericks for a Friday night showdown. The Knights would come out strong, taking a 3-1 lead on goals from John Alder (Sr, A), Cole Anchustegui (Jr, A), and Ryan Frechette (So, A), making the Mavericks a touch uneasy on their home turf. A blanketing Knights’ defense would keep the Mavericks to just one goal for the entire first quarter, causing multiple turnovers and forcing the Mavericks into an unfamiliar situation out of the gate.

Mountain View would find their stride in the second quarter, outpacing the Knights four goals to one on a lone dodge from Ryan Frechette (So, A). With some regrouping at halftime, Bishop Kelly would come out and go toe to toe with Mountain View, continually chipping away on offense and increasing the pressure on defense.

After three, the Knights were still in range of pulling right back into the game thanks to goals from Alder and Jared Dolby (Sr, M), but the Mavericks still found a way to continually keep them at arms’ length, even stretching their lead by one to 9-6.

With just twelve minutes left to play, Bishop Kelly knew the pressure was on. The Knights would almost double their shots on the night with the fourth quarter alone, but couldn’t seem to find the cage, except for another goal from Alder (bringing his total to four goals on the night). Mountain View would score three more of their own and bring the spread to a much more comfortable final at 12-7 in favor of the Mavericks.

Offensively, Bishop Kelly was led by John Alder with four goals and four groundballs and Henry Liao clamping down the advantage at the face-off x and nine groundballs to boot. Defensively, the Knights were able to frustrate the powerful Mountain View offense thanks to strong performances from Grant Koehl (Sr, D), Nathan Miller (Sr, D), and Luke Kempers (So, G) in cage with ten saves.
