Knights Find New Success on Senior Night

The Bishop Kelly Knights (3-7, 4-10) took on the top-seeded Eagle Mustangs (9-1, 10-3) Wednesday night, celebrating their Seniors and looking to continue their growth. Despite a strong start, the Knights would be unable to overcome a very disciplined Mustangs squad, who took advantage of any and all errors made by the Knights.

The Knights would come out with a special vibe Wednesday, recognizing their Seniors and knowing all to well this would be their last home game of the season. Despite scoring the first goal on a quick fastbreak to John Alder (Sr, A), the Mustangs would answer quickly with four goals of their own. Once the Knights were able to settle in a little bit, Jared Dolby (Sr, M) would respond with one of his own to bring the score to 4-2 after one quarter of play.

A unified defense would help keep the Mustangs’ powerful offense somewhat corralled through the portions of the game. A strong individual effort by several of the Mustangs though, would keep them at a comfortable distance ahead of the Knights. Bishop Kelly would tie the game at five a piece on goals from Ryan Frechette (So, A), Robbie Rebholtz (Sr, M), and another from Dolby before Eagle would go on a run of their own, stretching out the lead to 9-5 of four quick goals in the last three minutes of the half.

After halftime, the Knights would look to chip away at Eagle’s lead once again, scoring two more goals, both from Frechette to Alder. The Mustangs would continue to score in bunches and gained a little more cushion in the third, bringing their total to 13-7 after three.

With one quarter left to play, both teams would settle down and look to find gaps in each other’s defense. Only Eagle would have success this quarter, thanks to strong goalie play by the Mustangs netminder. The Mustangs would finish the game with a 15-7 lead, securing their first place seed in the playoffs and giving the Knights plenty more to work on.

The Knights will turn to the Centennial Patriots (2-8. 5-12) now, for their last game of the regular season this Saturday at 1:30 PM at Hobble Creek Park. Bishop Kelly edged out Centennial in their previous meeting 12-11 in OT. With playoffs beginning next week, the Knights will look to continue their growth and keep building towards a strong run in the playoffs.
